5 Important Setup Tips for Your New Android Device

July 8, 2023 10:01 pm

Congratulations on your new Android device! There are a few things all new device owners should do when setting up for the first time, and this guide will take you through best practices, as well as some tips and tricks you may not have known!

1. Set up a Google account.

A Google account is essential for using your Android device. It’s required to download apps from the Google Play Store, sign in to cloud services like Gmail and Google Drive, save your passwords for easy logins, and many other features of your Android device. If you don’t already have a Google account, you can create one during the initial setup process for your new Android device.

2. Back up your data.

Before you erase anything from your old device, it’s important to back up your data, also known as a transfer. This includes your contacts, photos, videos, music, and any other important files that you want to keep. There are a few different ways to back up your data on an Android device. You can use the Google Drive app, the Android Backup app, or follow this guide online.

3. Choose a security method.

Android offers a variety of security methods to protect your device from unauthorized access. You can choose from a PIN, password, pattern, or fingerprint sensor.

  • PRO TIP: Research shows that a password is the most secure option when choosing a security method. Of course, we recommend trying a few different options and choosing a security method that you find easy to use that fits your security needs!

4. Personalize your settings.

Once you’ve set up your security, it’s time to personalize your new device. This includes things like your home screen layout, notification settings, and app permissions. This can be a broad category, so we’ve included a list of ideas to get you started:

  • Use a different launcher.   The launcher is the app that controls the home screen and app drawer. There are many different launchers available, each with its own unique look and feel.
  • Install a theme.   A theme can change the look and feel of your entire device. Themes can change the color scheme, icons, fonts, and even the notification sounds.
  • Use a custom font.   If you’re not happy with the default font on your device, you can install a custom font. There are many different custom fonts available, so you can find one that matches your style.

5. Install your favorite apps.

The Google Play Store has millions of apps to choose from, so you’re sure to find something to fit your needs. It might also be helpful to search online, consider checking out this list from Android Police here!  By following these tips, you’ll be able to get your new device up and running quickly and easily.
